Gas Atomization

Crucible Research has four gas atomizers to handle a multitude of material systems in various quantities. The atomizers are used for production, research, and alloy development.

Atomized powders include titanium and titanium aluminides, nickel base superalloys, copper alloys, and cobalt base superalloys. The resulting spherical powder is ultra-pure, ultra-clean, and free flowing.

Our atomization equipment includes:

  • Titanium Gas Atomizer
    • 100 pound furnace capacity
    • Refractory-free melting and pouring
    • Cold wall induction melting system
    • Bottom pour melting crucible
    • Argon or vacuum melting
    • Argon atomization
    • Instrumented melting and atomization
    • Video documentation of each heat
    • Rapidly solidified powder
    • Powder is processed in a dedicated titanium clean room

Titanium Gas Atomizer

  • Laboratory Gas Atomizer
    • 5 to 50 pound vacuum induction melting (VIM)
    • Gas atomization and VIM ingot production facilities
    • Tap temperatures up to 3,350 oF
    • Argon, Nitrogen, Helium, or gas mixtures atomization
    • Wide range of particle size distribution
    • Capability to atomize and screen powder under a continuous inert atmosphere

Laboratory Gas Atomizer

  • Pilot Gas Atomizer
    • 150 to 800 pound vacuum induction melting (VIM)
    • Tap temperatures up to 3,350 oF
    • Argon or Nitrogen atomization
    • Wide range of particle size distribution
    • Capability to atomize and screen powder under a continuous inert atmosphere

Pilot Gas Atomizer

  • Experimental Refractory-Free Gas Atomizer
    • 0.2 to 0.7 pound furnace capacity
    • Refractory-free melting and pouring
    • Tungsten arc melting and bottom pour system
    • Argon, Nitrogen, Helium, or gas mixtures atomization
